The Valley of the Kings is one of the highlights of a visit to Egypt – as you’ll see by all the tourists here. Already challenging enough to navigate due to the steep underground tunnels and cramped surroundings, they become even more so when you throw in the hundreds of tourists crammed inside each one. If you want to avoid the crowds, you’ll need to wake up early. Aim to get there as soon as the site opens so you can be first in line.

The tombs were never intended to be visited – these are, after all, places of burial. Light levels are kept specifically low in order to safeguard the delicate paintings on the tomb walls. If you want to see detail, bring a torch with you. Not only will it help you navigate some of the trickier tunnels, it will also let you see the artistry and skill required to make these tombs so spectacular.

In summer, be sure to bring plenty of water and hop on the tourist train that takes visitors from the entrance to the tombs – otherwise you’re looking at a 500-metre/yd walk in the searing heat. At E£1, it’s a bargain.
